Aug 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic led to a 2.5% drop in the global specialty chemicals value from 2019 to 2020. The impact of the lockdowns varied among the chemical sectors. Those that were primarily used in “essential” industries grew in 2020. These include chemicals used in disinfection/cleaning, personal protective equipment and other medical devices, food and beverage, and other consumer essential products. Demand for chemicals that were consumed in industries that were forced to enact full or partial shutdowns—automotive, construction, and other manufacturing sectors—contracted. In addition, the crash in crude oil demand impacted specialty chemicals that were consumed in exploration, production, and refining. The economic situation remains fluid, and while progress has been made in vaccination rates worldwide, the virus and its newer variants will continue to impact the specialty chemicals industry throughout 2021. For this study, growth is projected to return in 2021 and increase at a slightly higher pace than the economy through 2026.
