Nov 2021. Benzene (C6H6) is the smallest member of the aromatic family, representing close to 36% of aromatic feedstock demand (BTX), and 10% of primary petrochemicals demand (olefins and aromatics) as of 2021. Benzene is largely produced as a coproduct in oil refineries and petrochemical units such as p-xylene and steam crackers. Thus, supply of benzene is closely tied to demand for products such as gasoline, ethylene, and p-xylene. During the production process, apart from benzene, other aromatics such as toluene, mixed xylenes, and ethylbenzene are also produced at times. Coke-oven is the only non-petroleum-based feedstock and the oldest process for benzene production.
