Sep 2021. Only three of the many possible products resulting from the chlorination of benzene have any large-volume application—monochlorobenzene, o-dichlorobenzene, and p-dichlorobenzene—which combined account for about 96.5% of the total chlorobenzenes market. The main downstream market for monochlorobenzene is nitrochlorobenzene production, accounting for about 84% of total monochlorobenzene consumption in 2016, declining to 82.1% in 2021. Nitrochlorobenzenes are consumed as intermediates in the manufacture of dyes and pigments, rubber-processing chemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other organic chemicals. Organic synthesis intermediates are the largest application for o-dichlorobenzene, accounting for 83.7% of total o-dichlorobenzene consumption in 2021. The fastest-growing application for p-dichlorobenzene is PPS resin, accounting for more than half of global p-dichlorobenzene consumption in 2021. Substitution of alternative chemistry and growing environmental concerns have contributed to the gradual decline of monochlorobenzene over the last decades. However, good growth in mainland China and the Indian Subcontinent and growing global demand for p-dichlorobenzene have stabilized this trend.
