Jul 2020. This report focuses on high-purity isoprene. Isoprene, also known as 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene or terpene, is a colorless, volatile liquid, insoluble in water, but soluble in alcohol, ether, and hydrocarbon solvents. Isoprene is produced and sold in different concentrations (e.g., concentrated-type isoprene and high-purity isoprene). Major applications for high-purity isoprene include use as a monomer for the manufacture of polyisoprene elastomers, styrene-isoprene-styrene block copolymer (SIS), and butyl elastomers. Smaller volume amounts of isoprene can be used or converted for viscosity index improvers, specialty isoprenic elastomers, flavors and fragrances, epoxy hardeners, vitamins, medicinal chemicals, agrochemicals, and other uses.
