This report covers primarily lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, and spodumene concentrate in which lithium is contained, with additional data on lithium chloride, lithium bromide, lithium metal, and organolithium compounds. Lithium is sourced from the evaporation and concentration of lithium-containing brines or from the metallurgical processing of hard rock lithium-bearing deposits, mainly containing spodumene. The market has experienced a major shift in production patterns in the last few years. Most production no longer comes from brines but from hard rock deposits, with Australia taking the lead as a major miner of lithium. Australia-based mining companies no longer ship unconcentrated ores to mainland China. They moved up the value chain, producing concentrates on-site, which are shipped to mainland China for direct conversion mainly into lithium hydroxide. Production of lithium compounds in Australia even if in a nascent stage, already began. While the production of lithium from hard rock dominates, brine-derived production still constituted a large part of the market share, accounting for 33% of the supply in 2020.
