Nov 2020. Mainland China became a major player in the phosphorus industry after the government decided to use its relatively large supplies of low-cost hydroelectricity in the mountainous southwest region as a basis for phosphorus production in that area. Almost all of China’s yellow phosphorus capacity is located in four provinces in southwestern and central China—Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Hubei. Elemental phosphorus (P4) is the starting material for phosphorus-containing chemicals used in a wide range of industrial markets. The phosphorus and phosphorus chemical industry is currently undergoing major changes, especially in raw materials trade. Mainland China remains the world's largest producer and consumer, and was, until recently, the major global exporter of elemental phosphorus (yellow or white phosphorus). In 2020, Kazakhstan was the world's largest exporter, followed by Vietnam, a relative newcomer to the phosphorus market.
