Jun 2021. Propylene is the second-largest volume chemical produced globally. It is an important raw material for the production of organic chemicals such as polypropylene, acrylonitrile, propylene oxide, and oxo alcohols, as well as for a large variety of industrial products. Despite the recent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, global consumption of propylene will continue to grow during 2020–25, driven primarily by the developing markets in Asia, particularly mainland China. Propylene consumption varies by region, based on the development of downstream derivative capacity. Polypropylene is projected to continue to be the dominant outlet for propylene, and its overall share of the global propylene market will expand further through 2025. Uncertainties brought about by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the trade dispute between the United States and mainland China, and economic and security concerns in some regions have cast a shadow over the global economy; this report has been designed with IHS Markit’s latest economic and industry forecasts.
