Jun 2021. Consumption of sodium chlorate is closely linked to developments in the pulp and paper sector. After tremendous growth during the switch from chlorine bleaching to the elemental chlorine–free (ECF) bleaching process in the 1990s and early 2000s, the global markets for sodium chlorate have matured. The overall global market continued to grow through 2018, albeit at slower rates than in the past. However, 2019 and 2020 proved particularly difficult for the sodium chlorate markets, as the COVID-19 pandemic hit the pulp and paper industry just as it was recovering from oversupply and falling prices. Recovery of the pulp industry is expected by 2022, driven by continued demand for tissue pulp for hygiene papers, bleached packaging papers and cartons, and continued replacement of recycled paper with virgin pulp.
